Hi friends! Happy Thursday.
Hope you are having a great week!
I shared this photo and caption on Instagram Monday:
Here is what I’ve learned from being Maxwell’s mama: somedays he will be the most challenging little being in all the land (yesterday) and the next day he might just be the sweetest (today). As the adult it’s my job to be steadfast in my emotions and reactions and to roll with whatever the day brings You cannot let the little babes be the ruler of your mood because they are much too for that (at least mine is). My mama friend @mstiteley told me she thinks of the song ‘Your Gonna Miss This’ and it speaks so much truth for living in the moment and being thankful for both the challenging and the easy. #momlife ”
A lot of mamas could relate.
And I started thinking, this messages applies way beyond motherhood.
We’re in charge of our own emotions as well as our reactions to other people. We cannot let other people dictate what type of day we have because then we’re on whatever rollercoaster everyone else around us is on. That could lead to some very unpredictable days.
A lot of times I will pause and assess my reaction to someone. Why is this upsetting me? Does this really matter? Am I reading too far into this? Try a few of those questions if you feel yourself being reactionary to someone.
I do believe in surrounding yourself by people that make your life more full, positive, and happy, however we don’t get to choose every person around us 😉 If you missed it, go back and read Surround Yourself: The People Around You Matter. It suggests and exercise that may be beneficial to you about the people that you do get to choose. Here is a quote from the post: “How is your team looking? Those around you should elevate you to be better and more positive. Remember, you aren’t doing this to be critical of people around you…you are doing it as an exercise to see the type of influences that surround you.”
This message came at a good time because my friend just reached out to me for a couple books suggestions. She said she was looking for more positivity in her life. Her workplace has been a little draining lately and she wants to get out of the rut.
I love her approach. Books have had an enormous impact on my mindset and sometimes are the perfect reset. Here are my suggestions (if you have been reading along for a while, you’ve heard me mention these):
I said to her immediately get and start Present Over Perfect: Leaving Behind Frantic for a Simpler, More Soulful Way of Living.
Next, the book Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder. My friend Sam just told me at the wedding we attended that this book was a total game changer for her. She loved it!
Both of those filled me up and gave me inspiration that I still call on to this day. In fact, I was just listening to Thrive on the way home from work again yesterday. It you don’t think you’ll have time to read, a BIG suggestion is downloading the Audible App! I listen to books to and from work (35 minutes each way) and it fills me up SO good. Puts me in the best mood! Use this link to: Try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks! That way you can also download those two pick me ups right away.
Here are my next 3 audible downloads: Wild and Free: A Hope-Filled Anthem for the Woman Who Feels She is Both Too Much and Never Enough, Why Not Me?, and Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear.
Let me know if you’ve read them and if you liked them! Also feel free to drop any other suggestions you think I’d like.
Keep on keepin’ on…even when those around you are grump city. Be the one smiling and nice, the breath of fresh Spring air in the workplace 🙂
