Hi friends! Happy Thursday!
We’re STILL over the moon. Drew has off this entire week, so it has been amazing to have the house just the 4 of us. We do parenting as a team and he realizes the importance of helping me to recover and get off to a great start with Trey. This means he is cooking, cleaning, filling my water constantly, organizing like a maniac, doing yard work (which is making him feel better and making me feel like we don’t need to focus on yard work…hahahaha) and most important of all showering Max with attention and love. I never want him to go back to work and thanks babe! 😉
We’re keeping Max in his regular daycare routine during my maternity leave. He will still be going three days a week as he does when I work. We decided this was BEST for all 4 of us. This is also how I’m able to still blog, because I did this whole one as Trey slept on my belly. Ya’ll, I love blogging and helping people! It fuels me and is something I really enjoy…that’s why even during this time I’ll be keeping up with it!
I’ve been getting a lot of questions about my postpartum gear suggestions, breastfeeding supplies, and what I REALLY want as a new mama. I wanted to do this post when everything is SO fresh in my mind. If you are a regular reader, no fears! I’ll have some non-baby posts soon 😉
What you ABSOLUTELY need (and need to have ready):
Bao Bei Maternity Sculpt & Recovery Leggings: I brought several pairs of postpartum leggings with me to the hospital and THESE are the winners. I’m wearing a size SMALL and am usually a size 6.
Why I love them and you need them: After delivery, you CORE is very stretched and sore. Compression has been researched and proven to speed up the healing process. My sister Krystle, a physical therapist, recommends that every single woman have compression post baby. From the Bao Bei website: “Specifically engineered to help women recover from pregnancy! Our High-waisted Recovery Leggings offer 360° of complete CORE compression & support. Anatomical support panels created by a Physical Therapist provide targeted compression to the abdomen, low back, pelvis, and legs.” I have two pairs and they are an item that I’m constantly going to live in until my core heals more. They are FAR more supportive/compressive than the other brands I had on hand. Worth the investment because 1) Core health. 2) I’ll wear these for months postpartum!
U by Kotex CleanWear Ultra Thin Pads with Wings: These are my favorite postpartum pads! Stock up!
Why I love it: They are lightweight and I love the wings! I was able to transition into these right when I got home from the hospital and they are MUCH more comfortable than the enormous pads you wear right after baby. Last time I know I bled for about 5 or 6 weeks. Every woman is different, but I definitely needed a couple boxes.
Simple Joys by Carter’s Baby Onesies: Carter’s is our favorite brand and fits our babies the best. Please get 10 of these and wash them in your Dreft Baby Detergent, so they are ready to go. We just got a few from Kohl’s that were really cheap SO check there or Target too. Have them ready to go! Okay, you get it right…ready to go? This will save you. If you don’t know the gender, get gender neutral ones instead of waiting.
Why I love them: They are 100x easier than buttons. Your sweet little one is going to need to be nice and cozy when he or she is SO little, so they can live in these. Trey has been going through about 8 a day because we’ve had a ton of trouble keeping his pee contained AND on top of that my right boob is already overflowing again. Essentially it works as a super soaker as my sweet little guy tries to keep up with it. SO sometimes I’m changing him because he is soaked with breast milk. Yes, I put a burp cloth or bib over him…this is a SUPER soaker ya’ll.
Simple Joys by Carter’s Swaddles: These cotton swaddles! Get 6 of them. HAVE them READY to go.
Why I love them: I think they work way better than any muslin ones. They keep the baby swaddled better and are super cozy. We have about 8 cotton swaddles at this point. We have a few more coming in the mail because we’re having some serious pee issues over here. AND this swaddle is the BLANKET Max sleeps with every single night. SO you’ll definitely get your money’s worth.
PRO TIP: When I’m changing Trey at his our new changing station in the laundry room (blog post coming soon on our laundry room makeover) I throw the zipper onesie and cotton swaddle I’m going to put him in, into the dryer. That way, he is SO darn cozy he has no choice but to drift off to sleep…I wish 😉 It does work pretty darn well though.
Extra toiletries: STOCK up! Weeks before your due date make sure you’ve got all your essentials! I was talking to my best friend while finishing this post and this was HER suggestion. Thanks Michelle! They needed to make a toilet paper run because they had so many visitors when Autumn was born. I thought that was a great point. Stock up on hand sanitizer, toilet paper, paper towel. Make sure your shampoo, conditioner, makeup, etc. etc. is all plentiful before your arrival. Amazon prime is fast, but it is also just easier to have it all home and ready beforehand.
If you are planning on BREASTFEEDING:
I deeply want to help any mama that is going to tackle breastfeeding! PLEASE get yourself prepared for the wild ride that is the beginning of breastfeeding and you’ll be thanking yourself! The last thing you want is to make it more stressful than it already is. Having the right gear on hand will save you and make your chances of success higher.
You never know how soon you’ll have to PUMP. I’m ALREADY pumping one of my boobs as recommended by the lactation consultant. I’m going to share MORE about my second breastfeeding journey because I’ve been getting SO many questions from other mamas that have an inverted nipple or two.
Why I love it: It doesn’t need to be plugged into the wall, so you never have to worry about if there is an outlet near. It has great power and gets the job done. I only have to charge it about once a week. It is easy to highly recommend it! Additionally, if it were I…I would just get spare parts right away! That way you don’t have to worry about cleaning everything right away. I remember priming spare parts after Max!
BLANQI nursing top: I love this and HIGHLY recommend it.
Why I love it: I have two colors! The black and white. You need quick and easy access to your boobs and this gives it to you. They are tight and long, so perfect to put on under ANYTHING! Designed to keep your belly covered when you lift up your top to nurse. I have mediums! This is the top I’m wearing in the picture above!
PRO TIP: As a second time mama, I do use the Medela Quick Clean Micro-Steam Bags to wash the parts. This is fast and easy! You put the parts in the bag with water and then pop them in the microwave for a minute and a half. The benefit being: I don’t have to wait for the dishwasher to fill up to get my parts clean. Yes, dishwasher. Ain’t NO second time mama going to boil the parts as I did the first time around. Just save yourself the trouble and use the steam bags or the dishwasher!
Simple Wishes Signature Hands Free Pumping Bra: You NEED this. Otherwise you’ll be holding the pump at your boobs for the entire time you have to pump and you can’t do anything else.
Why I love it: HANDS FREE and adjustable. It works when your boobs are enormous during engorgement and then when your boobs get much smaller. My best friend said this was the only thing she has to Amazon Prime after her babe. Get it ahead of time mama!
Medela Tender Care Lanolin Tube: Better to be proactive than reactive. Use this from day 1 to make sure your nipples stay intact.
Why I love it: I’ve tried ever single nipple cream under the sun and this is my favorite. SO I primed 4 before this rodeo ever started.
Nursing Pads: Yo, your boobs are going to leak. I know as a first time mom this post might be making you think, WHAT AM I IN FOR?! Last time I used disposable pads, but now I just use these nice reusable ones. I might not be willing to do cloth diapers, but I can help the environment this way! I have two packs of these, so a crap ton of them. I go through many a day and then you can just throw them in the laundry.
Why I love them: I mean, I can’t walk around with leaky boobies and milk stains. Needed!
SO, You want to give an amazing post baby gift?
I’ve been getting this questions A LOT, so I thought I’d share what I would love:
Breastfeeding Basket: If you know the mama to be is planning on breastfeeding, making a little breastfeeding survival basket would be the cutest thing ever! I actually just thought of this and need to use it for one of my soon to be mama friends. What to include: Milk Snob nursing cover (this is actually one of my GO TO gifts! It is SO fun cause you can pick one out that is the mama’s style and she will LOVE it), Blanqi nursing top, Medela Tender Care Lanolin , Peanut Butter Energy Balls, an adorable Wave Water Bottle. Now, that is the DREAM basket…feel free to pick and choose especially between the more expensive items.
Amazon.com $25 Gift Card: I know people think gift cards are impersonal, but MAKE IT PERSONAL. Get the mama a card, write about how you know she is going to be SUCH an amazing mama. Give her SPECIFIC reasons (because heck, I’m sure your friends ARE going to be amazing mamas) and she might need a confidence boost from YOU! Next, include your FAVORITE book recommendations and say you got the gift card so that she could buy some books on AUDIBLE! Audible is an Amazon app that has audiobooks. I never thought I would LOVE audiobooks as much as I do, but I could literally never use my hands turning pages on a book at this time in life or even read a tablet. The newborn period means a lot of hands on work, but daytime TV sucks. SO, she can simply listen to amazing books that will make her happy! There you go, personalized and SO sweet. Give some awesome recommendations and ask around! Also, who cares if she goes with nipple cream and diapers instead. 😉
Lalabu Soothe Shirt: This is probably something that she didn’t buy herself, but is SO freaking nice to have. I’ve had Trey in it twice already and he is SO cozy. I would LOVE to get this as a gift. Sizing: I’m a small, and mine is REALLY snug on me. That being said, my uterus is still getting small every day and I think it is going to fit much better once my postpartum swelling, engorgement, and involution figure themselves out.
Zipper onesies: If the mama does not know the gender GENDER SPECIFIC zipper onesies. Drew and I love, love, love waiting until birth to see the gender of our babies. Although you’d have to pick this up post baby, it is SO sweet when people pick out clothes specifically for our little misters. Just stop at Kohl’s or Target on the way to visit and get what will be some of their VERY first gender specific clothing. She is going to love you, especially if there is something cute on the BUTT! 😉 I would get newborn size, everyone thinks to get bigger clothes…but, unless she had a 10 pound baby newborn will fit her baby for about a month and she needs these!
Dinner or takeout: My friend Lisa literally said, “Where is your favorite local takeout place and when can I get it delivered for you?” If you live locally and can bring a nice home cook meal that is SO sweet for new parents. Drew and I aren’t picky AT ALL, but if your friend or her partner is…you could ask what they want you to make! Takeout is amazing too, you just have to be very direct like Lisa was otherwise they probably won’t let you 😉
My neighbor Krisi dropped off WARM blueberry muffins yesterday. Drew and I both immediately ate one and were SO surprised and happy! That is totally a neighbor win! Dropping off a snack or a meal is seriously SO thoughtful.
Hope you enjoyed this post and found it to be helpful!
You are going to rock new mamahood OR gift giving.
