Happy Thursday friends!
This blog post idea came from a conversation I had a while ago with a girlfriend. I kind of Taylor Swift my blog post ideas from life experiences (so watch out if you are my friend! lol). We were talking about how one of her friends doesn’t really have any hobbies. Someone close to her actually said, “you need a hobby.” Not in a mean way, but in a way of trying to help her to feel more happy, less stressed, + more fulfilled. In her case she needed something outside of work to help balance her out. SO many Americans pour so much time + effort into their work lives that their life outside of work gets short changed.
When someone asks you what your hobbies are, what do you say? Are they fulfilling? Stress relieving? Making you better?
I wanted to share a glimpse into my hobbies today + how they enrich my life. I’m also sharing practical tips on how to make time for them.
When people ask what I like to do or what my hobbies are, I list blogging + working out. These are two things that make it into my weekly life. There is a balance to be found when it comes to being a mommy, career woman, wife, + also continuing to be myself. The blog + working out allow me to be my healthiest + happiest self.
Running BalancedAmes has been a great light in my life. I love researching for blog posts, learning, reading positive messages to get ideas, connecting/reconnecting with people for the interview series, + spreading information about health + fitness. I’m passionate about this blog! It is my creative space in this little corner of the internet + my hope is that people come here for a pick me up or good knowledge to make their lives healthier.
Even with the birth of Maxwell, I wanted to keep nourishing the blog + posting regularly. I’m SO thankful that Drew is very supportive because that makes all the difference! This blog takes a lot of time to put together. Depending on the post, it takes at least an hour (and probably more like a few!) to develop, revise, + edit before I can hit publish. How do I find the time? I utilize Max’s nap time + I’ll also take time on the weekend when Drew is on daddy duty. With a little planning + a lot of dedication a post appears every Tuesday + Thursday with a few extras along the way.
If you have been following me on Instagram, you also know that I’ve been adding my workouts back in! I have my 6 week postpartum appointment today (about a week early, they had to get me in when they could) to make sure everything is looking good. I’m excited to (hopefully) get a green light to resume normal activity very soon! This runner is excited to RUN!
A lot of people told me that I wouldn’t have time to workout, “ohhhh just wait until you have kids!” Drew + I have figured out + will continue to figure out how both of us can get workouts in. The good news is that I have plenty of great examples of mommies + daddies that are still getting their workouts in all around me. Of course this looks different than before baby! For me, I need to utilize the weekends more than before. Getting a workout in on Saturday + Sunday when daddy is home makes it easier + more convenient for all 3 of us. I also try to sneak away during a weeknight or two for a quick workout + I’ll do a home workout during Max’s nap time. Max + I also go for walks together during the day to get out of the house + increase our activity level. I’ve been very thankful for a late spring baby so that this is an option for us!
I know some people are worried about saying they need “me” time. Mommies + daddies can feel guilt (“mom guilt” is a real thing) for taking time to themselves. People with very busy work schedules can feel like they don’t have the time for a hobby. This is where I’ll mention balance my friends. Maybe you’ll have to let go of a few things that are just taking up too much of your time. For example, if you have a TV show for every night of the week…there is A LOT of time right there. Maybe you could also spend less time online (but, keep reading this blog! haha).
I’m a firm believer that in this household each of us needs time to ourselves. Drew has a tee time on Saturday morning + I have some weekend workouts planned. It makes us both better to each other + better parents to Max. We gain stress relief, patience, + mental clarity. I’d encourage you to make sure you have something that is making your life enjoyable + keeping you ticking besides work.
Have a great holiday weekend friends! I wrote this blog about BBQ Eating + 4th of July last year if you want a quick pep talk on not OVER indulging too much. 😉 SO fun to look back at younger Ames + Drew.
