Hi friends! Happy Thursday.
Today marks our 38th week of pregnancy! We’re holding strong + ready for Baby Kiefer whenever he or she feels ready to come out + meet us! 🙂
I’m SO excited to have Katie on BalancedAmes today! I met Katie at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. I was browsing down my Instagram feed one night + noticed that Katie started a blog: Love, Katie Rose. I’m excited because I love Katie’s style + cannot wait to see this creative side of her. I wanted to have her on the blog to learn more about her new venture + hear how she is balancing being wife, mom, and career woman on top of it! Plus, I truly love supporting other creatives + want to give this blogger babe support + encouragement.
Ames: Welcome to BalancedAmes. Introduce yourself for the readers 🙂
Katie: I’m Katie! I live in Minneapolis with my husband, Mike, daughter, Madeline (9 months old) and kitty cat, Pounce. We have fun!
Ames: First things first, what inspired you to start Love, Katie Rose?
Katie: I’d been wanting to start a blog for a while, but never had the confidence to dive in. A friend of mine designed the logo for me and that was a big motivator to get going! After having Madeline, there were so many thoughts and ideas in my mind that I just wanted to write down. I thought this would be a good outlet for my creative energy, inner thoughts and expression of my style. A diary of sorts!
Ames: I just binge read every post 🙂 What is your vision for your blog? What do you get most excited to blog about?
Katie: I really love blogging about Madeline but I also want to be mindful that it doesn’t totally take over the blog. Being a mom is a HUGE part of my life so that will indefinitely shine through in my posts but I also want to make sure I post about things I’m passionate about outside of that like fashion, travel, being healthy and staying active. A: Yes! I’ve worked to find a balance between pregnancy posts + health/fitness/positivity posts. I want to continue to the same when our baby comes 🙂
Ames: Current spring uniform:
Katie: I’ve been living in comfy shift and swing dresses and sneakers right now! It’s so easy, comfortable and still stylish. I can dress it up with jewelry for work or dress it down with a baseball hat on the weekend. It also transitions well into my role as a mom!
Ames: What are you favorite workout brands to wear?
Katie: I will always love Lululemon and Athleta – although spendy, the stuff really does last, stays in place and fits me well. My mother-in-law also just got me a few pairs of leggings from Sweaty Betty and I’m obsessed. They are reversible and the fabric is swoon-worthy soft. Check them out!
Ames: Speaking of working out, what do you do to stay in shape? Healthy staples in your diet?
Katie: I’ve been doing the Kayla Itsines guides and I love them!! It’s a great combination of weights, stretching and cardio. The routine is all laid out for you and it lends itself very well to my lifestyle (aka trying to find more hours in the day!). All the workouts are max 45 minutes and they are GOOD workouts. I noticed results right away. After I had Madeline, I started to get back into the groove by walking daily and as soon as I got the green light, I started this. Oh, I’m also running the Twin Cities Marathon in October so training for that will start in June! YIKES! A: Awesome! I’ve done Kayla workouts before! They are good workouts, challenging, + time efficient.
Healthy staples in my diet and items I always have in my fridge are spinach, avocados, grilled chicken, quinoa and TONS of fruit. I like to start the day with either avocado toast or an avocado smoothie. Yeah – I really like avocados. 🙂 Also, water – allllllll the water (it has to balance out my coffee addiction)! A: AHHHH! You’re speaking my language. I’m known for my love of avocados.
Ames: Tell us about your job.
Katie: I’m a Software Project Manager at a company called The Nerdery. I LOVE it. I’m surrounded by the most intelligent, hardworking and friendly people you could find on a daily basis. I learn something every day and they make me better. Plus, we have dogs at work – what more could you want?
Ames: Okay, let’s talk about your family!
How did your pregnancy go?
Katie: I loved being pregnant (I know, I’m so annoying and gross). I can say that because I did have a relatively easy pregnancy – who knows what will happen with the next! I also really loved that it was a time where it was really just the two of us, sharing the same body. I loved the idea of having Madeline so close to me and being able to protect her fully for the only time in her life essentially. Every kick and every hiccup reminded me about what we were doing – pregnancy is amazing! A: There are actually many people with this answer! I’m surrounded by mommies who really enjoyed their pregnancies.
Ames: You were adorably stylish during it! I swooned over your maternity photos 🙂 Best tips for bump styling?
Katie: Awe – thank you, Amy!! That was a fun night! I tried to dress for my body type and to utilize as many non-maternity clothes as possible. I’m tall, so I had to make sure that dresses in the summer weren’t too short with my bump so ended up with a lot of maxi dresses and jeans and tank tops. I’m also a big advocate of showing that bump! The very loose and boxy dresses and tops just made me feel huge so I chose more form fitting pieces. Also, above all, be comfortable!
Ames: Your little family is SO adorable. Tell us how the first 9 months with Madeline have gone.
Katie: Thank you!! I am going to need someone to tell me to stop writing because I could go on FOREVER – but, I won’t. 🙂 In one word, they went FAST. I cannot believe she is 9 months old – it seems like just yesterday or an hour ago she couldn’t lift her head up and now she’s a little tornado crawling around the house and playing with everything she can. It has been so much fun – every stage is so different and you don’t realize you are out of one stage until your into the next! It’s been amazing watch her grow into this little human – the wonder and discovery in babies and children is so cool. Watching her discover her hands, her feet, what certain words mean, how to give kisses, hugs, etc has been the absolute best.
Ames: Best tip for a brand new mommy:
Katie: Enjoy it and know that everything changes so incredibly fast. The first 2 months are really, really hard. I wasn’t prepared for how hard they were going to be, but in the moments when I was sleep deprived, hadn’t showered in a week and was on the verge of tears, I’d look down and she’d be doing something new – like she’d smile for the first time! Before I knew it, she was sleeping through the night and she was drinking a bottle. Everything is a phase, so when you are in the thick of it, take a step back and enjoy it. Hold that little, tiny baby and stare at the way they are peacefully sleeping in your arms and realize how you are everything to them. It doesn’t last forever! ALSO – do what works for you! There are a lot of opinions out there about what is right and what is wrong — trust your gut. What works for you is probably what is best for your family.
Ames: How do you find balance between work + mommyhood?
Katie: I’m lucky that I work at a company that really values work/life balance. When I am at work, I put on my professional hat and when I leave, my mom hat immediately goes on. I try not to take work home with me and be present when I am with Madeline 100% of the time. I’m not going to lie, it’s hard. There are days where all I want to do is be at home watching Madeline crawl around, blowing bubbles outside and cuddling with her. However, I really like what I’ve done in my career thus far and enjoy my job. It’s important to me, as a working mom, to set an example for Madeline of what a working mom can be. I also soak up ALL the hours on the weekend with her that I can!
Ames: What is the biggest surprise about motherhood that you weren’t expecting?
Katie: The love. I knew I’d love my daughter an insane amount, but oh my God, the love is unparalleled. It’s like nothing I have ever felt before and it was immediate from the first time I heard her little cry. I now know what people mean when they say they’d do anything for their child.
Ames: You + Mike seem so happy together! What are your best tips for a happy marriage? Ps. That video he made you! So sweet.
Katie: Thank you! I had no idea he was doing that and forgot he even took some of those videos. That time in my life was such a blur it was so much fun to relive it again. He got some major points for that one – especially the part where he captured me telling my sister her name (she was named after her)! Mike and I are really good friends on top of being husband and wife and because of that we have a very comfortable and open relationship. We act like idiots together and truly love hanging out. We also ALWAYS say whats on our mind and do not let things stir. Sometimes this means we fight, but it also means that we know where the other stands and how they feel and we always come out better for it. Marriage is work. It’s two people who were raised in two different families coming together to create their own normal. I’m grateful to be with someone I can be my entire self around (the good, the bad, the ugly) and he still loves me for it. Also, he’s seriously so funny – I know I’ll be laughing my whole life! Lastly – date nights!!! We have a date night at least once every other week and think they are so important for us to have one on one time – do we talk mostly about Madeline? Maybe – but the point is we are doing it with each other.
