An exciting thing happened after work on Monday: I came home and booked flights for a girl’s vacation in October. Finally pulling the trigger on flights for a Seattle + Portland trip that I’ve been talking about with some friends for months.
We love hiking at Devil’s Lake. It’s a cathartic and beautiful experience every time we go. In fact, we were a tad bit obsessed last year when the leaves were changing. Somewhere along the way, we started talking about taking a hiking trip together.
While my husband and I love traveling together, there is much to be said for taking separate trips with our friends. Drew + I have always placed a high value on prioritizing our friendships and enjoying our own hobbies/interests outside of our marriage. We love a lot of the same things, but in our couply-ness and marriage there are still two individuals. He doesn’t want to go on a long bike ride and I don’t want to play 18 holes of golf. Additionally, there is no way that he would think a trip spent mostly hiking was a relaxing get away and I don’t want to go on his Vegas trip to gamble, drink, and eat at buffets.
Friendships mean the world to us, and a lot of our friends have been in our lives before we started our relationship. We want to continue to nourish and grow our friendships.
For me, girl’s trips are a must! I’ve done beachy, hiking, city, etc….and I always leave the trip with a filled up heart. Here’s why:
- Time to connect: Work and other adult responsibilities often get in the way of being able to spend good, quality time with your friends. Sure a night out here and a dinner there are awesome, but taking a trip and having all that time together will really allow you to catch up and (re)connect with your friends.
- It’s good for the soul: Girl’s trips are good for your mental and physical health. Most everyone is happy on vacation, and then you add your girlfriends in?! It is a great refresher and break from real life.
- You are on the same page: As I mentioned above, my husband and I have a variety of different interests. Often on vacation there is compromise to be had on what activities are included. Additionally, he is never going to understand taking Instagram pictures of leaves. My girlfriends are usually on the same page as me on what activities to do, where to eat, what to talk about, etc.
I would highly recommend booking a trip with your favorite girlfriends soon!
Have a great week! -Amy
