Happy Monday friends! Today I wanted to post on a couple of my favorite subjects: positivity and being generous with compliments. First I wanted to start with a little blog talk.
When I first presented the idea of BalancedAmes to Drew + where I saw it going + how I wanted to post consistently…one question he asked was “are you going to have enough to write about?”
As I sit here typing my 40th post, I can see his point 🙂 Some days I have ideas shooting off my fingertips (there have been days where I’ve started 3 different posts just so the idea for each doesn’t escape me) and then there are others where I think…what do people really want to read about? On those days, I’ll just go about my day and knowing that I will find inspiration. Usually if a thought won’t leave my head…I know it’s blog worthy because it is inspiring my entire day. That’s where this one came from 🙂 If you have a subject that you would like to see on the blog, just comment or shoot me an email.
Positivity. I’m a positive person. Of course, I have my days or situations where I feel like a grump. I try my best to re-frame things in my mind and give them a positive spin. On Friday as I was studying and doing blog stuff, I started thinking about the concept of spreading positivity.
One of my co-workers asked me if I was always “so chill and positive”. Truthfully, no. A couple things in my life changed that really helped.
1) Drew and I became more invested in our faith which has influenced the way we live and prioritize. We try to keep each other in check if we’re letting worldly stresses get the best of us. We work on this continually, but it has definitely changed our lives and relationship for the better.
2) I moved from Chicago to Madison. If you haven’t noticed, I L-O-V-E this city. My personality + interests seem to vibe better here. Not to mention I moved here to be with Drew + I’m closer to my family. Double bonus.
3) Yoga. I’m serious! The deep breathing and the positive vibes and phrases that the yogis said clicked with me. Phrases such as: “just let the day roll off your back” or “breath in the good, and breath out the bad”..and I would think why not?! YES! If I’m ever stuck in a stressful situation I deep breath. I do it before speeches, in critical nursing situations, if I’m having trouble falling asleep, etc. etc.
If you feel like you are stuck in a rut, or you’re feeling negative more often that not I would encourage you to evaluate and reflect on possible changes you could make 🙂
Be generous with compliments. I saw this quote on my friend Erin‘s Instagram:
I love this quote! I think it feels great to get + even better to give compliments out generously.
Drew + I visited a friend to help celebrate his 30th birthday. The next day we both were talking about how amazing his wife looked. She had clearly lost weight, and that’s no easy task! I told Drew I was going to reach out because she is definitely doing something! Sure enough, after I complimented her and told her how great she looked…she told me that she has been working really hard on improving her nutrition and workout routine (she did a 24 Day Challenge to get the ball rolling…and not through me…otherwise I would’ve known she was working hard!). She is a regular blog reader, and I’m over the moon for you girlfriend. It’s awesome to see someone taking a hold + prioritizing their health 🙂
I love social media, especially Instagram. I love commenting and telling people that I love there dress or hair or photograph or whatever stuck out to me when I saw the pictures. It is the truth + genuine, so why keep it to myself? Why not share the compliment? It can be as easy as emoticons (hello heart eyes).
Just like anything, it works the best in person! I try to do this all the time at work because my co-workers are amazing + so helpful.
I’m also obsessed with hand-written notes. There is nothing that makes my day more than receiving a note or card in the mail or a simple post-it from Drew. It just warms your day!
If you are thinking a positive thought about someone share it! If it’s negative, I hope your momma taught you better than that. Spread the love. Send someone a card this week! Give out a couple compliments. Make the world a more positive place. xo, Ames
