SO excited about this interview! Today on the blog, my friend Maison from Maison Meredith Photography. Maison and her husband are a husband + wife photography team.
Drew (my husband) and I met this power couple through our life-group which is a group we attend through Blackhawk Church. This group has been a huge blessing in our life, we love it. We’ve built community with some amazing people, including Maison. She inspires me in her faith, her pictures, and her blogging. We have some exciting things coming up together, and I cannot wait to share them with everyone!
We also have a shared love for the Lord + Chipotle + Instagram, so it is easy for me to see why we click.
Ames: Introduce yourself:
Maison: Hello!! My name is Maison Engel and, in order of importance, I am a Christ-follower, wife, and wedding photographer! I was born and raised in Wisconsin, met my husband, Caleb, while both of us were studying at The University of Wisconsin-Madison, started Maison Meredith Photography in January of 2013, and became a puppy-momma to our sweet Yorkie-Poo, Vivian, in August of 2013! Our little family lives in Madison + we don’t plan on ever leaving 🙂
A: Tell us about your job:
Maison: My husband Caleb and I are the owners + photographers at Maison Meredith Photography based here in Madison, WI. We shoot around 30 weddings per year and LOVE it. Being full-time wedding photographers allows us to daily pursue our two greatest passions—photography AND marriage.
A: I love your blog, your pictures, your Instagram…everything girl! What is your favorite thing about blogging? What do you find most challenging?
Maison: There are SO many things I love about blogging, but I will just mention two of them! : ) First of all, blogging allows our past, present, and future clients to really get to know us on a more personal level and this is SUPER important to us. As much as we love taking + producing beautiful images, we love—even more probably!—investing in the lives of our couples and cheering them on as they prepare for and enter into marriage!! Blogging allows us to share our own struggles, joys, and experiences as we ourselves journey through life and marriage together! Secondly, blogging allows us to connect with others who we may not ever get to work with. For example, Amy—you found our blog AFTER you were already married, so you will never be an “MMP Bride.” And as sad as that makes me (hehe!), I’m so thankful that we still get to positively impact you personally, as well as your marriage with Drew, through our blog! Blogging is such an amazing way to spread love, positivity, challenging thoughts, pretty pictures, etc., with the world!!
The most challenging thing about blogging is definitely coming up with content/being inspired to write! Believe it or not, I use to HATE writing. Like, high school papers + college essays … my worst nightmare!! And while I still don’t LOVE to write, I AM passionate about sharing more than just photos of our couples, but their STORIES as well. Every story is unique and impactful, and it’s really important for us to share our couples’ stories with those who follow our blog! When I’m not posting about a client/wedding/session, coming up with content can sometimes be a challenge because I never want to write a blog post just to post something. I only want to share something that I think will be beneficial, influential, or encouraging to at least one other person out there! GOOD content is super important. A: I love this answer and completely agree. I always want to be proud of what I’m writing 🙂
A: With the social media component of your business, are you ever able to unplug?
Maison: I’m going to be honest with you, this is a really tough one for us—okay, especially for me!! I know that I am on my phone more often than I should be because there are always work-related things I can be doing on my phone (like answering emails)!! However, there ARE times that we know it’s important to be unplugged. One is walks with our dog; during our walks, we cannot have our phones out! Instead, they are a time for us to talk to one another about how we’re doing, as well as enjoy being outside. Another time is when we are around the table with friends. Whether this is sharing a meal or playing a board game, we do not have our phones on the table so that, instead, we can be truly present with those we are spending time with!
A: Proudest moment in your career so far?
Maison: I’m really not trying to avoid this question—but there really isn’t just ONE proudest moment. Every time we photograph a wedding and then get an emotional email/text/call from the bride and groom saying how much they love their photos … that is when we truly feel the “proudest” because to us, that’s what it’s all about!!
A: Favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?
Maison: Easy. There’s two: the details and the couple portraits : )
A: What is it really like to work with your husband everyday?
Maison: Haha! Uh oh! Just kidding 🙂 Of course, we can get on each other’s nerves just like anyone else! Those are the times when we learn patience or how to better communicate, forgive, listen and say, “I’m sorry.” The majority of the time though, it’s great!! Caleb and I have really different personalities that allow us to bring different gifts and ideas to the table when it comes to running our business. We each have specific and unique roles in the business that use our gifts and allow us to run things the best way possible. We definitely realize that not everyone was made to work with their spouse, but for us and our unique personalities, it totally works 🙂 A: I can vouch these two have very different personalities! I think it’s amazing they can work together + continue to be so happy.
A: Speaking of husbands, I know you guys waited until you were engaged to say “I love you”. Why was that important to you?
Maison: As things got more serious between us while dating, Caleb told me that he wanted to wait to say “I love you” until he was engaged because love is a commitment—a choice—and he didn’t want to say those words until he was truly committed (aka engaged!). I was completely on board. As hard as it was in those months leading up to our engagement (when I KNEW I loved him and just wanted to tell him!!! And hear him say it back!!), waiting was the best thing for us because it allowed us to reign in our emotions and base the foundation of our relationship not just on emotions that come and go, but on our true friendship and commitment to a forever with each other. A: Just over here smiling while reading this.
A: “Above all, our prayer is that our business would glorify God + that we would love our couples with His love + not our own.” I love this quote from your website. How does your relationship with God influence your business?
Maison: Yay! I love it, too : ) Our faith influences every single aspect of our business. From how we spend (or save!) our money, to what type of gifts we give our clients!! Don’t let me fool you—we are totally human + there are lots of times when I know we make decisions or do things that might not accurately reflect our faith—but our hope is that God would be glorified in US and in our business.
The main way our relationship with Christ influences our business is how we treat our clients! Just like the statement on our website says, “that we would love them with HIS love + not our own.” That the way we interact + treat them would be in a way that is equal to everyone, honest, generous, truly selfless, + seasoned with words of life + encouragement : )
Additionally, our faith strongly impacts our advocacy and passion for marriage. We believe that God loves marriage (and that it is one of His greatest gifts to us!!), and encouraging couples as they journey towards this gift is so significant for us!!!
A: Favorite thing about marriage?
Maison: Knowing someone is always there for you, no matter what 🙂 A: That is seriously awesome.
A: How do you guys find balance during your busy season?
Maison: Ahhh … this is a good one! But a tough one 🙂 I think for us, balance comes in scheduling things for ourselves, + that aren’t work related! For example, intentionally taking a weekend off (and marking it on the calendar!!) for our birthday weekends, or a weekend that some of our closest friends are getting married because we would rather be there celebrating WITH them than shooting a wedding! So scheduling time for YOU and writing it down on the calendar—no ifs, ands, or buts about it! I also think balance comes in routine and still doing the things that are important to you even in your busy season!! For us, that means our morning devotional time, daily dog walks, and nightly TV shows, even when we’re busy 🙂
A: What is your favorite way to stay active?
Maison: Walks with Vivian!! We are so thankful for her, for so many reasons, but one of them is that she forces us to stay active—even in our busy season!! Although she may way 11 pounds and look like a little teddy bear, Vivian LOVES to run. It’s actually quite amazing how long (and how fast!!) she can run!! Because she needs to stay active, we need to take her for at least one run or one super long walk every day. This helps us stay active, get outside, and spend time with not only her, but each other!! A: I had the pleasure of meeting Vivian and she is so well behaved and adorable! See Drew, we need a dog! 🙂
Special thanks to Maison for the interview. Isn’t she amazing? I’ll see her tonight at life-group and we’ve got some pretty sweet stuff coming up that I cannot wait to share with you guys! *To check out Maison + Caleb’s work, or follow along with their adventures, go to their website at www.maisonmeredith.com or follow them on Instagram! @maisonmeredith.
